Mar. 23, 2022) </p>\n        </div>\n        <div className=\"articleBody\">\n          <p>\n            Honestly, at this point in my life, I consider cool signaling a\n            worse crime than virtue signaling.\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">TRUE-COOL</span> &{\" \"}\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">PSEUDO-COOL</span>\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            The desire to gatekeep cultural artifacts comes from an insecurity\n            about our own (in)ability to produce valuable cultural artifacts, in\n            which case we tether our self-worth to our knowledge of cultural\n            artifacts unknown to others. Therefore our sense of intrinsic value\n            diminishes when others find out about said gatekept artifacts. (If I\n            see another ‘y’all wasn’t outside’ tweet, I’m not sure what imma\n            do).\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            The mindset I just described is the primary symptom of what I’m\n            calling <span className=\"editorsNote\">PSEUDO-COOL</span>.\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">TRUE-COOL</span> involves cultivating\n            an attitude of abundance towards cultural knowledge, and knowing\n            that ecclectic taste alone does not, in fact, make one superior to\n            others. Rather, those who embody and exude{\" \"}\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">TRUE-COOL</span> spend much of their\n            time sharpening their ability to communicate their love of and\n            enthusiasm for particular cultural phenomena, because their\n            confidence in their own work does not preclude them from doing so\n            widely (what’s more, they know that through the careful dissection\n            and proliferation of a beautiful piece of culture, they are\n            empowered further in their own practices).\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            That’s why, despite how commonly hated and misunderstood they are,\n            many professional critics are paragons of{\" \"}\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">TRUE-COOL</span>.\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            Don’t get me wrong, I’m guilty of having been a lightning rod for{\" \"}\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">PSEUDO-COOL</span> in the past, and\n            whether or not I’m <span className=\"editorsNote\">TRUE-COOL</span>{\" \"}\n            now really isn’t for me to say.\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            What I <i>do</i> know is that molecular samples of{\" \"}\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">PSEUDO-COOL</span> flourish in the\n            petri dish of hyperconsumerism. Cuz in reality the difference\n            between coveting clothing by an exclusive off-luxury designer brand\n            and coveting <i>knowledge</i> of that brand is negligible,\n            especially when you wield either of those things as a defensive\n            weapon against introspection.\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            To illustrate, here’s the stream of conscioussness of some sad soul\n            operating on a <span className=\"editorsNote\">PSEUDO-COOL</span>{\" \"}\n            frequency:\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            mine. mine. mine. miiiine. mine? OMG MINE. MINE? wait,\n            MINE!!!??!?!?? :((( mine mine mine no mine stop no MINE please no\n            please MINE? MINE? MINE?\n            MIIIINEEEM!!!!MIN!#MIN!#!!!@MI#!@NMNI!@N:LKWJDGF:LKHSDJRFN:LAKG\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            Toni Morrison (a conduit of{\" \"}\n            <span className=\"editorsNote\">TRUE-COOL</span> to say the least)\n            said, “...just remember that your real job is that if you are free,\n            you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your\n            job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy\n            game.” She said this in a slightly different context, but the\n            sentiment applies here — savviness about the beauty of the world is\n            a kind of freedom and a kind of power that is never to be hoarded\n            should you aspire to <span className=\"editorsNote\">TRUE-COOL</span>.\n          </p>\n          <p>\n            Just to be clear, though, I’m not saying that there are never\n            cultural movements and byproducts of those movements that should be\n            kept under wraps. <span className=\"editorsNote\">IYKYK</span> energy\n            is essential in many contexts.
